Interweaving Biomaterials: Exploring Traditional Crafts and Modern Innovations
Playing with the intersection of the old and new, and oscillating between art and design. There is a strong indication of the importance of storytelling, community, and preservation of history, particularly in women-centred spaces. This is evident in places like weaving circles, and the special relationship that extends beyond just making clothing for their homes and families. It is important to state how these crafts became one of the first acceptable means for women to receive an income, giving them financial freedom.
The existence and importance of the position community plays in these crafts inspired a deep dive into the history of weaving, who participated and developed the crafts, and the tools used. Identifying the meaning behind the designs and the role each part plays brings us closer to understanding the stories they tell.  However, this led to embarking on a personal journey to find my position within this field of design and crafting, which is one of solitary pursuits. It has led to encountering the diversity of how to partake, and how people establish an intimate relationship with their materials and tools.
